guard function, description & definition
A rash
guard
is a type of athletic shirt made of a nylon & spandex blend.
The combination of nylon and spandex create a garment that is
lightweight, quick
drying, flexible, durable, naturally antibacterial and water
wicking. Rash guards help prevent rashes, sunburn, chafing ,
jelly
fish stings & irritation caused by rapid impact with
surface water and waves. Rash guards should fit snuggly for optimum
comfort, function & performance in the water. Additionally, rash
guards have permeated many
sports and recreational activities due to their naturally
water wicking, quick drying, light weight, durability &
flexibility attributes
wet or dry & sun exposure without sunscreen.
Other important components of a rash guard include flatlock stitching,
and six panel construction. Flatlock stitching creates a seam where the
seam allowances lies flat to the garment instead of hanging loose from
it. It is made by adjusting the overlock or the thread over edge
stitch.
Flatlock stitching increases the strength & durability of the
garment for intense
exercise or recreational activities. Six panel construction versus the
conventional 4 panel tee shirt construction enables the user increased
mobility & flexibility wet or dry and less skin irritation.
UPF, Ultraviolet
Protection Factor, measures how much of the sun’s rays are
penetrating a garment. A rating
of 50 means that the fabric only allows 1/50th (2%) of the sun’s UV
rays to pass through it and blocks out 98% of UV rays. UPF protection
applies to both UVA and UVB rays.
